Parksville and Qualicum Beach share the warmest, calmest stretch of shoreline on Canada's west coast — kilometres of sand where the tide retreats so far the flats heat the incoming water, making these the Island's favourite swimming beaches. Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park is the anchor — at low tide the sand seems to run halfway to the mainland. Every summer Parksville Community Park hosts an international sand-sculpting competition whose giant works stand on display for weeks. In Coombs, the Old Country Market's grass roof comes with resident goats, a tradition since the 1970s. The waterfall parks are the region's quiet superpower: Englishman River Falls and Little Qualicum Falls both tumble through mossy canyons minutes from the highway, and the Horne Lake Caves offer guided trips into the Island's underground. Milner Gardens & Woodland in Qualicum Beach layers a heritage garden over old-growth forest with a tearoom view of the strait, and each spring thousands of brant geese pause on the flats — celebrated by a festival in their honour.

Getting here & getting around

The region sits on Highway 19 about 25 minutes north of Nanaimo's ferries, where Highway 4 branches west toward Port Alberni and the Pacific Rim — Cathedral Grove's ancient firs are just up that road.

Oceanside has long been a retirement favourite — mild, flat and friendly — but young families are following the same logic. The pace is beach-town slow, with Nanaimo's services half an hour away.
