Calvin Hunt – Copper Maker Studio

Calvin Hunt is a Kwakwaka'wakw artist working in the traditional Northwest Coast Kwagu'l style from his studio on Copper Way in Fort Rupert, just south of Port Hardy. His practice is grounded in the diversity, spirituality and transformation themes of Kwakwaka'wakw culture, guided by the knowledge and teachings of his Chiefs, Elders and fellow artists.

Hunt works primarily in western red cedar and is especially drawn to carving totem poles, masks and dance outfits. His designs follow the unifying symbolism of animals and legends passed down through his community, expressed through traditional subjects, design elements and colours.

The Copper Way studio is the home base for this work in the heart of Kwagu'l territory, where monumental carving and ceremonial pieces continue a living artistic tradition on northern Vancouver Island. Visitors to the Port Hardy area can find his totem pole work represented throughout the region.
